Julia’s* Story

Julia came from a well-off family.  Her parents thought the world of her, she was very bright and always made them proud.

As she got older she started hanging out with the cool kids and sneaking into clubs with her fake ID.  She was always hanging out with people who were older than her.

The group she hung out with always had plenty of cash so partying was never a problem.

After about six months she dropped-out of school and started just going out all the time.

Her parents were really worried about her, but she did have a steady boyfriend whose family were very supportive of her, so she would tell her parents it was all ok.

She started hanging out with a group that would always give her amphetamines whenever she wanted and they had a great time partying.  When her parents started cutting off her allowance because they were worried about what she was spending the money on, she started coming around the house when she knew they were out and taking money out of the place where she knew her parents kept their spare cash.

It started off in small amounts and then turned into larger amounts.

Her mum caught her one day and they ended up in a screaming match.  Her mum was sobbing, asking her how it had come to this.

The 2010 National Drug Strategy Household Survey found that in Australia, 4.6% of recent meth/amphetamines users aged 14 years and older reported stealing money, goods or property due to drug use in the last 12 months compared to 0.1% of those who had never used meth/amphetamines.
