Sophie’s* Story

Sophie had only been using as a social thing to start with.  One summer she went to a few festivals and started using more often.  Before she knew it she was using each week. She didn’t really see that it was causing any problems.  It was her choice anyway and she paid for it.

When Sophie’s grandmother died she inherited some money in her will to help her pay for the deposit for a house when she was ready.  As she was still quite young she decided to put the money in the bank and use some to buy a car.

Over the course of six months she dipped into this money spending the entire amount on amphetamines. She didn’t even really realise how much had gone and she always intended on paying it back.   She also didn’t really think about the fact that she was now almost using every day.

She started hanging out with guys because they would always give her some, this often meant returning the favour, but they were friends and were always nice to her.

One day a girlfriend came over and confronted her about this, and pointed out the fact that she had changed so much, what had happened to her life, and that she didn’t even get out of bed unless she had a line.  They had a huge argument, but she knew she was right.  How had this happened?

In 2010, there were more than 2,500 amphetamine-related treatment sessions in WA alone. Read more about the stats on amphetamines.
