Dexamphetamine can be effective and safe when used as prescribed by a doctor. The stimulant effect of dexamphetamine increases the activity of certain chemicals in the brain. In people with ADHD this increase improves their ability to concentrate and focus on tasks. The effects of dexamphetamine usually last between four and six hours.
Like all medications, dexamphetamine can produce side effects if used inappropriately. Side effects can include:

- Dry mouth.
- Blurred vision.
- Headaches.
- Depression.
- Insomnia (inability to sleep).
- Weight loss.
- Loss of appetite.
Driving under the influence of dexamphetamine can impair coordination, delay reaction time, distort perceptions and make it difficult to judge distances and speed.
