Beatball Basketball
What makes this competition work well is a combination of factors, including a host of organisers who are keen to embrace the Drug Aware message, strong partnerships, youth involvement and of course, basketball!
The competition is held at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka and began in August this year, running on the last Friday of every month through to June 2009. It encompasses a ‘three-pronged approach’: physical activity, lifestyle choices education sessions, and connection with other cultures to assist with targeting the challenges faced by these youth. The education sessions cover topics such as alcohol and other drugs, aggression, and understanding differences and family.
The launch of this year’s Beatball featured a Welcome to Country by Shane Gartlett, as well as a line-up of popular entertainment – Moana Dreaming, a female Indigenous band; The Seventh Element, a hip-hop group and DJ United States of Music. Also present were Luke Riches, a young Indigenous man who has played college basketball in the US, representatives from the North Metropolitan Community Drug Service and Warwick police officers. Each session is followed by a healthy dose of entertainment, a nutritious
dinner and an informative education session; let the game begin!
