Y-Culture 2009
Healthway and the Drug and Alcohol Office have provided sponsorship to a successful Propel Youth Arts WA program titled YCulture Metro for several years now. YCulture Metro provides funding and skills development for young people aged between 12-25. This program targets young metropolitan artists who have had limited experience in grant application writing as well as initiating and coordinating projects. It is open to all arts and culture projects across all artforms such as music, theatre, performance, new media, visual arts and crafts, street art, writing and dance.
The Drug Aware message has been promoted by the art events and provide drug, alcohol and smoke-free events. One such event involved dancers from Youth Ballet WA, which was held at the WA Academy of Performing Arts in Mt Lawley. ‘Conquer and other works’ included ‘Conquer’, a piece created by acclaimed choreographer Reed Luplau especially for Youth Ballet WA. This work is a fusion of modern contemporary dance emphasising the exploration of ‘dancers individuality’ and the love, passion, heartache and stress of everyday life. The evening also included solo performances by recent Royal Academy Of Dance award recipients and Sydney Dance Scholarship competitors, as well as presentations of ‘Spring’ choreographed by Youth Ballet WA director Sonya Shepherd, and ‘Oneandtwo’; a contemporary piece created by Sharron Dalla‐Costa. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
